June 1st, 2022

Dear Gilmore Families,
It is officially June! We have a full month of learning and fun ahead of us in this last month of school.  I want to begin by thanking you all for helping us honor our veteran’s in the 124th Huntington School Memorial Day Parade. Our scholars had such a wonderful time, they were full of smiles, and energy.  Take a peek at the photos Brockton Public Schools Facebook Page. Enterprise News Photos.
There are many great activities planned throughout the month to bring our school year to an end:
  • Thursday, June 2: Early Release 12:15 pm
  • Tuesday, June 7th: Grade 5 Elementary Fitness Day
  • Thursday, June 9th: Early Release 12:15 pm
  • Wednesday, June 22nd: Grade 5 Picnic
  • Thursday, June 23rd: Scholar of the Year Ceremony
  • Friday, June 24th: Gilmore Fun Day ($2 fundraiser, Uniform Free Day)
  • Monday, June 27th: Grade 5 Graduation: 9:00 am
Uniforms: As the days in June get warmer, we want to remind students to dress appropriately for the temperatures.  Students should continue to wear their school uniforms and it is recommended that they wear khaki shorts instead of pants for the warmer weather.
Security: We have worked diligently over the last few years to establish safety protocols at the Gilmore.  As a reminder, all exterior doors remain locked at all times.  If you are at the school for any reason, please do not open the door for anyone at any time.  Only the office personnel may allow access to the building.
Tardy: Please remember that students are marked tardy after 8:00 am.  All students must be signed in after 8:00 am by an adult.
Playground Safety:  As the days get warmer and our energy levels rise in excitement for the summer break, please remind your children of the playground rules at school. Our rules are easy: Play Respectfully, Play Safely, Play Responsibly, Play Kindly.  All recess activities are hands-free. We have fun activities that students can choose to play during their block. If they do not like the activity or if they are in a situation that makes them unhappy, they can 1. Pick another game. 2. Stand and Watch. 3. Talk it out.
The last day of school is June 28th.  It is an early release from school.  Check your Infinite Campus Parent Portal for important documents, test results, and report cards!
As always, contact us with any questions! Enjoy these warm days and have a wonderful weekend.
All the best,

Miss O’Brien

May 17, 2022

Dear Parent(s),

Everyone loves a parade! And what better way to honor long standing traditions and the rich history of Brockton than with the 124th Annual Huntington Elementary School Memorial Day Parade.  Our parade dates back to 1898 and has become a community institution.  We march in memory of those who gave their lives serving in our country’s military.  This is a memorable experience which allows our students to march proudly through their neighborhood alongside members of the school community, Campello community, and the Brockton community at-large.   We hope that you will grant your child permission to join us along the sidelines to watch your child march proudly with their class.

Although we moved into the Gilmore building for the Fall of 2017, we will continue the tradition to march in the 124th Huntington School Parade on Tuesday, May 31st, at 12:00 p.m.*  We will load buses from the Gilmore Elementary School around 11:15 am to be ready to march from the Huntington Elementary School.  Following the parade, we will return to the Gilmore by bus.

The parade route is as follows: the pupils will line up on the playground at the rear of the building, leave the playground and proceed east on Market Street, north on Warren Avenue, east on West Chestnut Street, south on Main Street, west on South Street, south on Warren Avenue, and west on Market Street to return to the playground.

This wonderful event gains the attention of the local paper and news outlets.  Please check with the office to be sure your child has a signed media release.  Also, please see that your child is appropriately dressed for this honorary position.  We ask that our students wear their school uniform including a navy blue collar shirt or the Gilmore navy collar shirt in keeping with the patriotic theme of our parade.  If there are any concerns about the above-mentioned issues, please call me.

We are pleased to inform you of this honorary position and look forward to seeing you at the parade.

Sincerely,

Dear Gilmore School Community,

I am writing to share some bittersweet news with the Gilmore School Community.  First, I must share that it has been wonderful to have our students in person fostering relationships with their teachers and peers.  The joy and excitement for learning has been wonderful to watch and has grown stronger each day, and the vibrant community we know and love has been restored.  All of the students' growth has inspired me.  I hope your children are sharing their incredible writing projects with you.  I am proud of the students and faculty for their hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

As many of you know or have heard from your children, I became a mom this year to Baby Leo.  Watching him grow and change over these last few months has been a fantastic journey.  I am excited to return from maternity leave to spend the last few months of the school year with the Gilmore community.  At the same time, it is with a heavy heart that I inform you that this will be my last year serving as the principal of the Gilmore.  I will transition to the Framingham Public Schools this upcoming school year as an elementary school principal.  Moving to a new district was not an easy decision; however, after weighing personal and professional goals, I believe it is best for my family.

I am grateful to have served as the principal of this vibrant learning community.  We have successfully established several community partnerships that allow for enrichment opportunities for the students, such as the YMCA, Science from Scientists, and Footbridge.  Additionally, we celebrated our community accomplishments with performances like the Community Beats concert, scholar of the month assemblies, and student enrichment showcases.  We beautified the Gilmore, making our mark with a mural and the United Way Day of Caring.  We established and grew the Parent Cafe structure in person and virtually through the pandemic.  We enhanced our academics through technology and across the curriculum in writing.  We celebrate and affirm diversity through our book of the month series.  And of course, we have celebrated the community with our Annual Lantern Walks and Huntington School Parade (scheduled for Thursday, May 26th).  And finally, we are creating a school library here at Gilmore!

I know that all of these opportunities will continue in the upcoming years because of the ambition of our wonderful learning community.  These strong community connections, partnerships, and pride of the families, faculty, and greater school community make it difficult to contemplate saying goodbye at the end of this year. I am looking forward to seeing you over the next few months.

Sincerely,

Marybeth O'Brien

Prezada Comunidade Escolar Gilmore,

Embelezamos o Gilmore, deixando nossa marca com um mural e o United Way Day of Caring. Estabelecemos e crescemos a estrutura do Parent Cafe presencial e virtualmente durante a pandemia.

Vaccine Clinic

12/6/2021

Hello Gilmore Families,

I’m pleased to share that the Gilmore Elementary School will host an optional COVID-19 vaccination clinic for members of our school community on Thursday, December 9, beginning at 2 p.m. in our gymnasium. Further information is included in a letter that we are sending home this week with your children.

The clinic is open to students, parents and guardians and immediate family members. A parent, guardian or emergency contact must be present at the time of the clinic. In addition to offering first doses of the Pfizer vaccine to students and family members, the staff at the clinic will also offer second doses and booster shots for eligible individuals. Please park on the left side of the building and proceed to the gymnasium. We will have staff helping to direct you to the appropriate location.

If you'd like to have your child vaccinated but you plan to send another trusted adult with them to the clinic, please call the main office to request that we send a consent form home with them. Each student must have a consent form signed by their parent or guardian prior to receiving the vaccine. Consent forms will be on site Thursday for parents and guardians who plan to attend the clinic. Again, we can only provide vaccinations to students who are escorted to the clinic by a trusted adult.

Thank you and have a great night.

Dear Gilmore Families,

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I love that we can enjoy the first snowfall, have time to spend celebrating holidays, and enjoy quality time with family and friends. This past year has been challenging, yet reflecting on the past year, I am so grateful for our Gilmore Community. Our families, students, and faculty have returned to this school year with resilience, brilliance, and the energy to move us forward. It has taken the teamwork of everyone to bring the Gilmore Learning Community together. We are truly all in this together.

As many of you know, I am expecting a baby boy this December. We couldn’t be happier. I will be going on maternity leave through March. The strong team at Gilmore will continue to support the work at Gilmore.  I am pleased to announce, Nicholas Molinari, former Assistant Principal of the Gilmore, will return to serve as the Interim Principal in my absence.  Mr. Molinari and I worked together for over 15 years at both the Huntington and the Gilmore School. Since Mr. Molinari knows the Gilmore families, educators, and operations so well, he will continue to support the excellent work that has gone on here at Gilmore.

Adam St Peter, our assistant principal, will also continue to lead the Gilmore along with Allison Hamblett, our STEM Coach.  Please continue to update your contact information with the office and register for our digital communication by texting “yes” to #67587 for text, email, and telephone updates.  Also, be sure to check www.gilmorehawks.com and our social media channels @hunthawktalk for frequent messages, updates, and events!

Your continued partnership is so appreciated. We look forward to all that the New Year will bring.

Best,

A Message about COVID-19 Notification Procedures

9/24/2021

Hello BPS families,

During our Open Houses this week, some families asked questions about how the district notifies the community if or when a case of COVID-19 is identified among the school population. Our nurses work with the Board of Health and our staff to identify and privately notify any close contacts. From there, the information is sent to the Central Administration Building and the Public Relations Department sends a text message to the entire school. We DO NOT and WILL NOT release any personally identifying information. The texts are sent on an as-needed basis so you may go days or weeks without receiving one because new cases have not been identified in your child's school.

If you have not already done so, please text “YES” to 675-87 to sign up for text messages. In addition to receiving COVID-19 updates, you will also receive other important info from the school via text.

The COVID-19 texts are for informational purposes only. We have an entirely separate process for notifying close contacts. While we understand families would sometimes like more information, please understand that your child’s teachers are not involved in the notification process and cannot provide you with any details. Questions about COVID-19 should be directed to the main office.

Our students and staff have been doing a great job wearing their masks, keeping their distance and washing their hands. Please keep up the great work. As a reminder, please keep your child home if they exhibit ANY symptoms of COVID-19 at any point this school year even if they are fully vaccinated.

Thank you.

Morning Drop Off Procedure: Safety First

9/9/2021

Good Evening,
This is a reminder about the morning valet drop-off procedure. It is extremely important to the safety of all members of our community that the traffic directions are followed.  Please enter the parking lot in the lane you would like to depart the parking lot.  The right lane will be forced to exit right out of the parking lot towards Grove Street, the left lane will be forced to exit left heading towards Perkins avenue.  Changing lanes towards the exit is not permitted regardless of how many cars are exiting.  This is to ensure that the flow of traffic runs smoothly and the crossing guards can safely monitor the students walking across the entry and crosswalks.  If you are in the right lane, students should exit on the passenger side of the vehicle.  If you are in the left lane, students should exit the driver's side of the vehicle.  This is incredibly important to support the safety of our community and each and every student.  I look forward to seeing you as you exit the parking lot! Have a great evening.
Sincerely,
Marybeth O'Brien

Greetings Gilmore Hawks,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year. We are SOARING with excitement to welcome you back to the Gilmore for an exciting year of teaching and learning. We are joined this year, by a few new dynamic educators.  The Gilmore Learning Community has been busy with excitement preparing classrooms to welcome your children back!
We learned and adapted so much last year as we transitioned from fully remote to hybrid and then to our full in-person return.  We are excited to return to five full days of in-person instruction in the building. Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic we will continue to implement safety measures. This will include the requirement for all students to wear masks while indoors and on the buses, social distancing of at least 3 feet between students where practicable, and regular handwashing and/or access to hand sanitizers. All visitors to our school will also be required to wear masks. The Brockton Public Schools will be offering COVID-19 testing on site.  Please watch for the information and the consent form.  We will continue to adapt as needed and implement safety measures as the Superintendent determines are needed to ensure that our staff and students’ safety and well-being are prioritized.
With each and every year, our commitment to high-expectations for learning and achievement continue.  We will be implementing a new math program this year in all classrooms, continue our early literacy initiatives with Fundations, REACH, and Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop.  Discovery Education Techbook and our Science from Scientists partner will be the core of our Science programming.  In addition to our core instruction, students will engage in enrichment activities with our partners that include: the YMCA, Community Beats, Imagine Arts, and BSU Book Buddies.  These promising partners support our goals for social-emotional growth and leadership.

Important MCAS Testing Dates and Information

5/13/2021

Dear Gilmore Families,
As we approach the end of the year, we prepare for our annual state assessments. All students in grades 3-5 will participate in the MCAS 2.0 or Next Generation MCAS. These assessments provide us with important data regarding the performance of our students and our school. This year students in grades 3-5 will be participating in these assessments during the months of May and June.  Each grade level will participate in 1 English Language Arts sessions and 1 Mathematics sessions.  The 5th grade will also participate in the Science assessment which is 1 session.  These tests are computer-based and will be administered using the student tablets.
If your child is currently learning remotely, they will be expected to take the assessment while at home.  If you prefer your child take this assessment at school, we can make those arrangements.  You will be asked to bring your child to school on the designated testing date and we will ensure a separate testing location for the remote learners. Please contact Miss O’Brien if you are interested in this option.
It is our goal to ensure that all students feel prepared and confident when approaching the assessment.  We ask that students take this assessment very seriously so they can show all that they have learned.  We ask that they show their thinking by working through difficult text and problems to demonstrate a growth mindset.  You can help at home by ensuring that your child:
  • Gets a good night’s sleep and plenty of rest the night before each testing session.
  • Arrives at school on time so they may enjoy breakfast in the classroom with their peers.
  • Comes to school with a positive “I can” attitude (a word of praise from parents is always a great way to begin the day)
Your partnership is very important to us.  Please call us with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Marybeth O’Brien

Please complete this Family Survey: https://forms.office.com/r/4WbqGU7UG8 to help us better support you transitioning back to school.

We are incredibly excited to welcome back all of our students on Monday, April 26th.  We want to assure you that we are taking appropriate precautions for safety throughout the building to accommodate safety guidelines outlined by the CDC and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  Doing our best to keep COVID-19 out of our school requires constant vigilance from every member of our community. I’d like to remind you to please keep your child home if you or anyone in your household is ill and awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test. You are encouraged to call the Gilmore to keep us informed of your status.  Below, please find important information that will help you to navigate the transition back to school.

Safety and Set-up: Students will eat lunch in the cafeteria at tables with plexi-glass dividers.  Each classroom has been set up to accommodate all learners with 3 ft of distance from seat to seat.  Each child will have their own desk and materials.  When moving from room to room or seat to seat, desks will be cleaned with sanitizing wipes.  Mask breaks will take place outdoors along with recess.

Health & Wellness:  Please monitor your child’s heath and wellness.  If your child or anyone in your household is feeling ill, please stay home and call in your child’s absence.  Please contact Nurse Sloane with any health concerns: (508) 580-7683.

Travel Advisory: Please follow the state travel advisory which advises that anyone entering Massachusetts including residents to quarantine for 10 days upon their arrival.  Returning residents may test out of quarantine if they receive a negative COVID test no more than 72 hours prior to their arrival in the state.

School Hours:  8:00 am -2:15 pm

Arrival:  Please be sure students are ready to exit the vehicle by having materials ready and a mask on.  This will help with the valet drop-off line.  When dropping students off, please remember to pull all the way forward and wait for school staff to signal students to exit the vehicle to ensure safety.  With the full student body returning, we ask that you have patience and work together to ensure a safe and efficient drop off.
Dismissal: Dismissal will be staggered.  We will continue to use the dismissal and parking procedures that you are familiar with.  We ask that you have patience as we ensure social distancing as students exit the building and report to their dismissal area.

ZOOM and remote learning is no longer available for students registered to attend “in-person learning Monday-Friday.”  If you are not in school, please contact the main office to report your absence. 508-580-7685  If you or a family member have been asked to Quarantine, please contact Nurse Sloane.  All changes to your designated learning model must be approved by Miss O’Brien and may take up to 4 weeks to accommodate changes.

Attendance Policy:
Students are expected to be in school if they have agreed to participate in the in-person learning Monday-Friday. Any student who does not attend on their in-person days will be marked absent.

COVID-19 Attendance Policy:  Our schools are committed to working with families who need to quarantine due to possible COVID-19 exposure. If your child is ill, please contact their school to discuss their options for participating in a remote learning model.

WIDA Testing: Students identified as English Language Learners (ELL) take an English language proficiency test every year. Testing helps teachers understand whether students have the language skills they need to fully participate in the classroom. Teachers use ACCESS for ELLs test scores as they decide how best to teach your child. Test scores also help teachers track your child’s progress in learning academic English and help schools decide what English language support services to provide. In order to prepare for the assessment, be sure your child has a good night's rest of at least 8 hours the night before their in-person day.  Also, have a healthy breakfast.  The testing schedule is listed below:
  • Kindergarten ELLs will be tested 1:1 during their in-person days beginning March 29th.
  • Grades 1-5 ELLs will be tested in groups during their in-person days the weeks of April 5-16th.
Early Release Days and Lunch Distribution:  During in-person early dismissal days, lunch periods will not take place during school time.  Instead, lunches will be sent home with students as they exit the building to be enjoyed at home.  This allows us to maximize time on learning.
Transition from Hybrid to Full-In-Person:  We are looking forward to transitioning towards 50% capacity for Gilmore students beginning the week of April 5th.  All students who have been attending in-person school in the hybrid model will continue to attend on the dates listed below.
As of April 26, in-person learning will be the default option for all hybrid learners in grades PreK-8. If your child is not attending in-person, please complete this survey  https://form.jotform.com/210815498271055    You do NOT need to complete this form if your child is currently participating in a hybrid learning model and you'd like to have them transition to full-time, in-person learning on April 26.
