
Ms. Kathy Norman, ESL teacher for the Gilmore Elementary School
Ms. Kathy Norman has been an educator for the Brockton Public Schools for 24.5 years. During her tenure, she has served as a first grade SEI teacher, ESL teacher, teacher leader and BEA building representative. Currently, she is a member of the Gilmore/Huntington Expanded Learning Time school for the last 12 years. Kathy is an ambassador for the Gilmore School. She spends a great deal of her time ensuring that all students and families feel welcomed and greeted each morning. She also speaks Cape Verdean and she is able to support Cape Verdean students and their families as part of the Gilmore community. She takes the lead role for our school WIDA testing ensuring the 50% of our student population are prepared for the ACCESS assessment each January.
Kathy is a committed educator, who provides feedback and expertise on our Individual Student Support Teams. She is responsible for 67 students on her caseload and therefore works collaboratively with all of the teachers in the building to ensure equitable and robust instructional practices that align to the needs of our English Learners at all levels. Kathy’s well respected by her colleagues and overall school community.
Most importantly, Kathy is an exceptional mother of three. Makayla graduate of Brockton High School and aspiring educator at Bridgewater State University. Michael “Mikey” senior, captain of the football team and recipient of the John and Abigal Adams Scholarship, and Matthew a junior at BHS and also a member of the Football team.
It is without hesitation the Kathy Norman receive the Red Apple Award on behalf of the Gilmore Elementary School for her commitment to our students, consistent instructional excellence to our English Learners, her dedication to the city of Brockton and her leadership and support as a colleague.
