The Gilmore Faculty is proud to nominate our Literacy Coach, Lisa A. O’Neill for the Red Apple Award. Lisa has been an educator for the Brockton Public Schools for 22 years. She began her career as a first grade teacher at the Brookfield followed by the Davis Elementary School. She then served as a facilitator of the Reading First Grant at the Davis School. In 2014, Lisa became a Reading Resource Specialist now known as a Literacy Coach of the Huntington/Gilmore Elementary Schools. Lisa begins everyday with children, her mission is to close the achievement gap and provide children with the gift of reading. Mrs. O’Neill is an exceptional educator who brings years of experience, enthusiasm and heart to coaching. She has an innate ability to diagnose the reading needs of individual students, designing a plan for intervention, and providing targeted instruction along with resources to teams. She works collaboratively with her colleagues and cooperating STEAM coach to share pedagogical methods that enhance the instructional practices of our learning community. Our school is multifaceted, requiring Lisa to take on many additional duties. Lisa has supported and organized our “One Book, One School” events to instill the lifelong gift of reading to students. She collaborates with professors at Bridgewater State University to strengthen our partnership, enrichment, and tiered mentorship opportunities for students.
This summer, as we prepared to open our doors as the Gilmore School, Lisa spent countless hours enlisting the help of her children and sister to rebuild our literacy closet and book buggies so they were ready for the first day of school. Her facilitation of our monthly school-wide Brockton Public Library Field Trips has provided memorable opportunities for students to experience the main branch of the library -- a place to make reading accessible beyond the school day!
Most importantly, Lisa has a heart of gold for students, faculty, and everyone she meets. Known by many of us as the “Cake Lady” or “Cupcake,” the staff at White’s Pastry know her by name. She remembers every celebration or good reason to bring treats to sweeten one’s day. And if she is without a treat, she is known to say, “Do we need a hug?” As if that is not enough, Sean, Richard, and Michael have a mother of the year. Spending most of her free time active in the PTA of their school, she helps with plays, bake sales, sports teams and so much more. On the weekends, Lisa cares for even more children as a skating coach.
All in all, Lisa O’Neill is a key member of our Learning Community, continuing to drive our focus “full steam ahead.”
